Sputnik – 50th Anniversary

The Sputnik “Спутник” program was a series of unmanned satellite space missions by the Soviet Union (USSR) in the 1950s. Today marks the 50th anniversary of Sputnik and the Space Race. Sputnik 1 was launched on October 4, 1957. The satellite weighed about 83.6 kg and was just 58 cm in diameter. The R-7 launch vehicle was actually designed to carry nuclear warheads. Sputnik 2 was launched on November 3, 1957, carriyng the first living passenger into orbit, a dog named Laika. The was no safe return planned for the spacecraft and its passenger, making Laika the first orbital casualty… We find pictures, videos and more!
